Cephalometric evaluation of the pharyngeal airway in relation to the vertical facial pattern in class II malocclusion: Cross-sectional descriptive study

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharyngeal airway in different groups of class II malocclusion in relation to the vertical facial pattern, and in consideration to gender.

Materials and methods: Lateral cephalograms of 62 patients with skeletal class II relationship with a mean age of 20 years, were analyzed. Each patient was then placed in one of three main groups. The groups were further divided into subgroups according to their vertical facial pattern. The upper pharyngeal airway of each patient was then calculated and analyzed. In addition, the size of the pharyngeal airway in males and females were also compared.

Results: Statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found in the size of the pharyngeal airway in the three main groups. Patients with hyperdivergent vertical facial pattern showed the smallest size of the pharyngeal airway in each of the three groups, with the hypodivergent vertical facial pattern showing the largest size of pharyngeal airway in each of the three groups. Males appeared to have a larger size of pharyngeal airway than females.

Conclusion: The hyperdivergent vertical facial pattern has the smallest size of pharyngeal airway while the hypodivergent vertical facial pattern having the largest size of pharyngeal airway. Males have larger size of pharyngeal airway than females.
