Background: The omega-3 role in orthodontic tooth movement is still a research point. Objective: is to evaluate the effect of systemic administration of omega-3 fatty acids on serum ALP level during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Materials and Methods: OTM was induced in 20 adult albino New Zealand rabbits with NiTi coil springs for 21 days. Omega-3 or saline was given every day via oral gavage during experimental period. Impressions were performed on days 0, 7, and 21 of OTM with three blood samples collected from the lateral marginal auricular vein. Biochemical analysis was done for serum ALP, calcium (Ca), and phosphorus (P). Results: A significant difference in OTM amount was found only in the 3rd week of OTM with means (1.72 ± 0.15), (1.445 ± 0.13) for control and experimental groups, respectively, with no significant difference in serum ALP level between control (66.72 ± 13.66) and experimental (60.09 ± 12.7) groups, although serum ALP was reduced in the experimental group and accompanied by an increase in serum Ca and P. Conclusions: Systemic administration of omega-3 reduced OTM without clear reliable effect on serum ALP level.
